Cheyenne Frontier Days drew the ire of an animal rights group this week after a steer died and a calf sustained a back injury when slammed to the ground during roping contests Thursday and Friday. A second steer suffered a broken leg and was destroyed.
Rodeo officials said the injuries were the result of unfortunate but rare accidents and that they are committed to making sure the animals are as safe as possible.
Investigators with the group Showing Animals Respect and Kindness, or SHARK, posted video of two of the incidents online and said the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association lied when it reported Friday the calf survived.
