Arrow-slay fiend guilty

A man with 20 years of experience hunting deer was convicted yesterday of murder - after firing an aluminum arrow into the heart of a stranger during a random argument on a Long Island street.

The jury needed only a few hours to convict hunter Thomas Sirico. 35, in the Jan. 8 killing of Juan Carlos "Angel" Munoz.

Munoz, a 27-year-old father of three, died after the encounter on a street in Mastic.

Sirico faces 25 years to life in prison.

"He certainly knew what he was doing," Suffolk County Assistant DA Denise Merrifield said during her summation.

The dead man's mother, Iris Maldonado, said: "Justice was served...He savagely killed him."

Sirico was drinking and arguing with a roommate about overdue rent money on the day of the slaying. He initially came outside their home with the bow and shot an arrow into his friend's truck.

Sirico then noticed Munoz and other across the street. A comment was made, and Sirico asked the group of strangers, "Who said that?"

When Munoz answered "I did," the agitated Sirico fired at him across the street, Merrifield said.

The man who stood accused of firing an arrow into the chest of a 27-year-old father of three last January in Mastic was found guilty of second-degree murder on Tuesday.

Juan Carlos Munoz was visiting friends on Monroe Street on Jan. 8 when an argument erupted between him and 35-year-old Thomas Sirico, who lived across the street, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota.

Witnesses told police that Sirico yelled, ³Do you want trouble?² before taking aim with his deer hunting bow and shooting an arrow at Munoz¹s chest from about 60 feet away. Sirico testified that he had stumbled and shot the arrow accidentally.

Munoz was later pronounced dead at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in East Patchogue. Sirico reportedly fled the crime scene and was arrested a short time later by state police in Westhampton Beach.

Sirico faces 25 years to life in prison at his sentencing on Jan. 9.
